BTC solution extends the lifetime of an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)

BTC-canada2

In September 2014, Eutectic Canada successfully completed an on-site job at a steel manufacturing plant located in Quebec. Before commissioning, the customer wanted to protect two new OEM parts in order to extend their service life and reduce plant downtime costs. Our mobile Eutectic Services team spent five days at the customer’s site to coat two elbows of an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) used in the steel making process. The interior surface of the elbows was arc sprayed with BTC 252, a proprietary Castolin Eutectic solution that combines arc wire spray and a densification process that is only available through our Eutectic Services workshops.

For this BTC job, 240 kg of BTW 55 were needed to protect a surface of 400 ft2 against corrosion and abrasion, the main cause of wear associated with this application. The elbows were new OEM parts that have never been in service before and have an estimated service life of two months. We expect to extend the wear life of each OEM part from two to ten months.

Eutectic BTC protective coatings significantly extend the service life of new and worn components, making them last longer than uncoated parts. BTC coatings are a more cost-effective solution than replacement of the worn parts and offer direct savings in materials and valuable reductions in downtime. The BTC solution is chosen to resist against the specific conditions of the corrosive and/or erosive environment.
